A Story of Depression

I always felt alone, different from everyone else.

As if my brain wasn’t quite wired the right way.

The depression started when I was in high school. I felt like I was a walking zombie, each day no different from the next. I think my parents thought I was just being a teenager so I never got help.

But as I got older, things got worse.

The college years brought out some new symptoms. I was starting to get anxious about classes and couldn’t let go of any of my failures. It’s also when I got my first migraine.

The first one was excruciating, a couple weeks later I had another. Soon, they were increasing in frequency, once a week, twice a week, every other day…

I got checked out by a doctor to make sure I didn’t have some form of a brain tumor, at least the results came back negative.

They blamed it all on stress, self-induced stress to be specific. I saw a psychiatrist for the first time and she prescribed some meds for me to keep the anxiety and depression at bay.

Our sessions helped a lot at first, just being able to put a label on things and know there was a reason for feeling what I was feeling. I even got to the point where I stopped going. But, as I got even older, I could feel things shifting again.

I had a great job and an overall decent life. Nothing was too bad and nothing outstanding. My depression was always lingering in the background, but one day it decided to steal the show.

I was just so tired all of time. I had no energy and my thoughts were sluggish. Work became almost impossible and everyday tasks felt like a huge burden. I had to pry myself out of bed in the morning and hope to make it through the day.

I tried medication after medication, therapy sessions, even ECT. Nothing was helping.

I stopped functioning like a normal person altogether. No more work, no more daily routines, I even had someone deliver groceries every once in a while. I was living in complete misery and nothing could relieve my pain.

By some miracle, amidst all that pain, I found Ketamine treatment at True North Wellness Center and everything changed again.

Before I knew it, I had my life back. I could think clearly again, handle everyday tasks, and guess what? I even got myself a new job.

Thanks True North, I owe you one!
